Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Mildred Elley?
Mildred Elley is a private, coeducational, accredited institution of higher education, offering Associate’s degree and certificate programs in a variety of fields within its academic divisions of Business Management/Office Technologies, Medical Studies, Paralegal Studies, Information Technology, and General Studies. Our newest academic division, The School of Digital Media Arts, is to offer degree and certificate programs in Game Design and 3D Animation and Digital Graphics and Multimedia Design.

What are the Digital Media Arts Programs?
In Fall of 2004, the college had initiated the process of development and approval of the programs in Game Design and 3D Animation and Digital Graphics and Multimedia Design. The programs were developed by a diverse group of faculty that came from the academic background (many with terminal degrees in their specialty fields) and from the industry (game designers, 3D modelers/animators, and graphic designers). The programs were subjected to a vigorous academic peer review process, with reviewers coming from RPI, Rochester Institute of Technology, and the State University of New York College at Oneonta. The reviewers’ feedback provided for further improvement of the curriculum. We are confident that the new programs are among the best in the country.

Is the College Credit Transferable?
Mildred Elley is an institution of higher education within the University of the State of New York /New York State Department of Education system, accredited by the Accrediting Council of Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS). Mildred Elley will issue college credit to students enrolled in its courses as non-matriculated students. This credit can further be applied to the degree programs offered by Mildred Elley, if the student decides to enroll in Mildred Elley’s degree programs in the future. Alternatively, the student can transfer the credit to another college. While acceptance of credit is always at the discretion of the receiving institution, nearly all colleges in New York accept credit earned at Mildred Elley, pursuant to a memorandum from the Regents of the University of the State of New York . In cases where the receiving college does not have an equivalent course in its curriculum, credit may generally be accepted to fulfill the free electives requirements in the degree program.

Why Study Game Design and 3D Animation?
Game Design and 3D Animation is a growing field of employment. As the structure of the American economy changes, higher consumer spending on entertainment and leisure is fueling the growth of the video game and movie industry. However, 3D Animation is heavily used in other fields, too: modeling of human body in medicine, production of visual aides in litigation and risk management support, modeling of warfare/equipment in military training, advertising and marketing, and so on.

Will I need Special Equipment or Software?
Whether the course is taken at Mildred Elley’s campus or at a participating local high school partner campus, the equipment and software for classroom instruction and lab use will be provided. The students may wish to install the software on their home computers for further practice. A free personal use copy of the software will be made available for such purpose.

Students will be required to have a removable flash drive with a minimum capacity of 256 MB to save their projects.

Mildred Elley will also provide a list of minimal and recommended computer hardware requirements and vendors of such hardware.
